Switch out your straight knife cutterheads for a new helical head.
Recently we’ve been switching out quite a few straight knife cutterheads in planers and jointers in favor of new helical cutterheads. It’s always a pleasure to run a board through a machine with a new helical head just installed. The advantages of going with helical head are always pretty obvious. For one, the machine is typically quieter and there is way less tear out as the carbide insert knives have more of a shearing action, as opposed to the entire blade hitting the wood at the same time. Another advantage, is the ability to rotate individual inserts, instead of changing all of the knives in the head.
At one point in time new helical heads were very expensive. Thankfully those days are history and today it is possible to get a new cutterhead for a very reasonable price. We’d be happy to quote a new cutterhead for your machine, and by the way, while you have the head removed, it’s always a good idea to install new bearings while your at it.
